Anyone Teaching Ham Classes?

*  Are you using Gordon West's curriculum or ARRLs?*  What times are the most people showing up for the classes? Weekday evenings? Saturday Mornings? Saturday afternoons?*  What is you class timeframe? 2 hour stints? 8 Weeks?*  Who are you scheduling your VE sessions through? Are you utilizing a local ham club or do you have an arrangement with VEs that you know? Or are you searching for sessions on the ARRL site and dropping in there?Thanks for any feedback! I am looking at scheduling my second class to start in early April and run 6-8 weeks. Probably on Thursday Evenings. The Saturday Morning class I am holding only has four students. Our stake is going to be puting on a tech class.  They did not specify which book they will be using.  I used the ARRL book for tech and the Gordon West for General.  I prefer the Gordon West because I'm not as technical as most hams and it made more sense to me.  I want my wife and daugter to get their tech tickets this summer so I purchased the Gordon West book.  I've also used Gordon West's morse code CDs and really like the guy's style.  He makes it fun and easy to learn.For VECs our stake in the past has just told people to go to where there is VEC testing happening.

I teach… well, not really. Here is what I do. We have VE tests every quarter at the local radio club. Four weeks before the test, I have a Saturday morning session for 1.5 to 2 hours where people will have the Yellow Gordon West Technician book, and follow along and listen to the Gordon West CD that follows the Yellow book. We listen to about 1/3rd of the CD's on each Saturday morning. My role is to bring the laptop and speakers (and donuts).  I stress to students that during the week they study the book and take the practice tests at QRZ.com.  On the 4th week they take the exam and all have passed so far.Brent - K4BSC

Hi Rob,This is Ted K0LDS down in Pueblo....I wonder what the possibility might be of getting a group of us to each prepare one (1) Tech class lesson, and putting them on UTube, or on a DVD? I'm finding that a lot of folks wishing to participate in amateur radio, but I'm having a devil of a time getting ongoing classes together to meet everyone's needs....A DVD would be a good idea in my view, to introduce the class lessons ahead of time....The Ham Radio Pod lessons are great (at http://www.hamradioclass.org/) and I'm thinking a DVD etc. would be even better....What do you think?   I teach a Tech class 2 or 3 times a year for our Stake, using the ARRL Technician book I feel that this book has more info that a brand new, fresh caught Ham needs to know. The classes are on a weeknight, 7-8:30, for six weeks.  I also do an upgrade class to help those who wish to get their General class license. For that class I find the Gordon West Q&A book to be best. I also have all my students take practice tests at both QRZ, and AA9PW.                                                    N6JJM
