I know what you mean, it's easy to get “over-excited” and scare away a potential ham.I've found most success with minimal information--"Hey, it's great and really good for emergencies. You just have to take this multiple-choice test and get at least 26 out of 35 right and you're a ham! Plus, they publish all the questions and the answers to study from." 🙂 Then offer some study sites or the study guide etc. and be available to answer questions.The technical discussions of which radio(s) to buy, antennas, bands and propagation, moving on to General, etc. I find is best left for later unless they want to know all the details up front. Yep, bite-sized is important!How about we post a bunch of bite sized messages in this thread and let it build itself over time, then someone investigating Amateur Radio may find it and can digest them slowly...[hr]I think the first point I make with anyone interested is this:The test is only 35 questions. If you have a drivers license, odds are it was a harder test to pass, the material is just different and all you need to do is study.The youngest licensed ham IIRC was 7 years old!If a 7 year old child can pass it, you can too!
One thing I would like to point out as someone just starting out… please do NOT say that the test is so easy a ___ year old could do it! 🙂
I have seen it over and over. It kind of psyched me out when studying. I have somewhat of an aptitude for basic electronics, so I understood enough of the concepts to pass the technician and General… however, my wife, which is taking her test in October, is scared to death, and most of that fright has to do with being embarrassed if she doesn’t pass the test because of those specific comments.
Not everyone has an electronics aptitude and these concepts are BRAND NEW. We need to remember to encourage those as if the concepts are new.
