This is an interestingantenna. Let us know how well it works! I would be curious about the SWR and what effects it (shape of the antenna, dimensions, materials, surrounding metalic objects like window frames, etc.)Rob
I built this one for 40 meters with a 1.5 to 1 VSWR across the whole 40 meter band. Though I used 3 pair cat5 wire with a equivalent surface area of 12 gauge.And mine is 30 feet up not sloped. It wasn't like the antenna in the first link. It was a sturdy PVC antenna, I think. I had the plans, but lost the jump drive I had them on.
I'm trying to decide to put up my usual inverted vee for 80-75-40 or try something new. I've always favored the inv vee, but now days there are so many alternatives! Doublets, G5RV, and Etc. I'd like to keep the cost down. My plan right now is a 50 Ft support in the middle and have enough area to support 75M in one plane and 40M in the other offset by 90 deg between them. I guess what I am looking for is feedback on who has had great luck with their choice of a wire antenna. I have a roll of 14 Ga solid copper to work with, and a PVC support centered on the property of 50 Feet. Can anyone talk me out of putting up my old standby inverted vee?Thank You.
I am not sure that I want to talk you out of the inverted V. Every one I have used has worked well. I do not know that I would put it in the middle of the property though. I would be more inclined to run the two in the same direction, one over the other near the side or back of the property, as long as I could keep it out of the way of power lines.James Stafford AJ5BS
I have made a version of the 1/4 wave ground plane for 2 meters. I like it because it is simple, easy to build, easy to mount, and works surprisingly well. I use it to check into the local ERC net (simplex), and I have no difficulty getting in or hearing the other participants on my 5 w hand held. After I built it, I checked it with an antenna analyzer and found the SWR to be acceptable with no trimming. Can't get much easier than that!GarthLogan, UT
I teach ham classes and I also teach people to build antennas in class as a hands on experience. I recently posted an instruction/plans for building one of those droopy ground planes, similar to what others have posted except I put in more detail. The problem I found was that many people have little knowledge about how to do simple things and so I have attempted to simplify the process so a person will have a good experience for all their effort. I agree with another antenna article that said the droopy ground plane is a great project to build. They work well. Droopy ground planes should provide a nice 50 ohm impedance match and be properly resonant if all goes well.You should find the info here: http://www.ldsradio.ca/~ldsradio/pdf/000_-_2m_Weeping__Willow_2013.pdfAnother excellent antenna is the Roll-Up SlimJim made from TV twin lead. I have made many and sold them to other hams and emergency prep groups for back packing and connecting to hand held radios for extended range. I live 92 km from a repeater and pulled it up with my Icom 91A from in my basement. Yes, it's that good. My design makes use of Radio Shack twin lead. Other twin leads often seem to have quite different velocity factors.
