I have no idea what I'm doing yet. Just joined. Age 77! Became a HAM 7 yrs ago when called to be Ward ECS. Aced the General 3 years ago. Managed to whip the Extra 12 days ago, and it's posted on FCC. Sent off for my vanity today. Crazy, huh? The Extra test really twisted my tail, but it was good to win it. When called as ECS, I wanted to do something worthwhile, so I looked at possibilities for using the FRS radios (cheap) for a Ward Emerg Comm Net, and we now have something north of 41 families with them. They've worked well in Ward and Stake Emerg Comm exercises AND IN REAL Emergency Conditions when three families were isolated in a big Colorado blizzard with loss of elect power, heat, cell and wall phones. Our Bishop, I, and the RS President were on FRS with the three families, getting reports and finding out what they needed to know. So, I have a real testimony of the FRS radio feeding into the HAMs. We have 12 HAMs in our Ward, two of whom are conselors in the Bishopric. Love it
