NVIS – hamsticks or dipoles

Hello All,I'm investigating an easy set up for NVIS antennas. I've read that you can use 2 ham sticks, of the same frequency, as a rotating dipole. I've read about the theory, so I know how it works. I want something that will easy to deploy in a small amount of space.Any suggestions or experience with these types of antennas?

Hello,I use my G5RV antenna for NVIS on 75 meters at daybreak usually on 3873.000 MHz LSB. I'm in Harrington, WA west of Spokane 60 miles ...there is usually about 30 ~ 45 minutes of great comms about 500 miles diameter ...Mike AD7VV

A horizontal loop makes a fine NVIS antenna. If you are going to deploy at your stake center, you can use the light poles in the parking lot to support one. At home I have 300 feet of insulated stranded 14 GA wire held up by 3 20 ft 1 inch irrigation pipes that I had down by the barn. One pipe is by the house and the other two are uphill so there is about a 30 degree slope to the loop. I live near San Luis Obispo CA and can occassionally get on Tennessee nets on 75 meters. I regularly boom into Ariz., Utah, Idaho and of course Calif. nets. It is tunable 160 – 6 meters. Total cost: $38.00.

I had a loop around my home also supported with irrigation pipe at the corners until the wind finally snapped one off. Mine was made with a 2″ and 3″ pole telescopically arranged rather than one so there was a fair torque in the wind. Of course mine happened to snap off and crash to the roof over my bedroom after I came home from the hospital after having a Whipple procedure. It sounded like the world was finally coming to an end. Naaah, it was just noisy. My wife, VA7EJH, took instructions from me quite well and removed the broken pole and wires off to the side of the house until I healed up and could get at it again.The loop had worked fairly well but now I am using an Alpha Delta DX-CC antenna which is around 30 feet up and it's working fine, maybe even a little better than the loop. It was all for working NVIS so does a good job. The DX-CC is being fed via a SGC-230 tuner on the outside of the house up via 450 ohm ladder line. Virtually almost zero loss and unlimited bandwidth. I look at the portable HF antennas market and bought a Buddipole at SeaPac. Digging around on their web page I found the attached file of their version of a NVIS antenna using the Buddipole  Antenna. As to how well it works I have not had chance to put the configuration to the test.  I made all the parts and wire but  live in a apt and lack the room to set it up. I have had some fun with the antenna in the Dipole form and did 2000 miles contacts with the antenna set up for 40M  on a 24 FT painter pole in my trailer hitch holder. If I get an opportunity to put it up  the NVIS style and test it, I will post againDaveNa7dp
