Within our stake we have an EmComm specialist in addition to the EmPrep specialist and the Canning specialist.My Ward has an EmPrep Chairman who has been asked to study for his Ham license so he will actually serve as EmComm specialist too. I am the ward EmPrep specialist. Other wards are counting on their EmPrep specialists to handle communications as well, they are in for a surprise, for the April communications test we will only be accepting Ham checkins. 😀Hopefully we will be able to further the progress. I will be starting another ham class here in May and I plan on doing one in the Fall after our Emergency Preparedness fair.73,WB7SGL
The ward that shares the building with mine definitely have all of their gear in one sea bag. They have an emergency table of organization already in place, and an off-site operations center. When that 8-plus earthquake hits the Salt Lake Valley, they will be ready for it. I am a little envious, actually. I keep trying to light a fire under my bishop; he just doesn't seem to take it seriously.
When I was the Emergency Communications Specialist for the Fort Worth Texas Stake, I was also the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator. I served under the leadership of the High Councilman for Emergency Preparedness. We had Ham Radio Operators in each unit called as Unit Emergency Communications Specialists who made up our Emergency Communications Committee. We met at least quarterly to discuss what we needed training on, when to do it, etc. We also held a net each Sunday night to verify communications worked and to pass traffic from the stake to the units.
Greetings Jim AJ5BS, This is Paul KE5TTU from Joshua. Things haven't changed much since you left. We did publish an updated version of the Handbook. It has all the info from your old handbook plus a lot of procedures, radio etiquette & protocol info that's helpful to our newbies. We are getting much better at simplex nets with the relays and all. There are many new hams and we do classes regularly. You are missed. Take care.
The two stakes that I have been involved with have called a Stake Emergency Communications Specialist and each ward calls a Ward Emergency Communications Specialist. The Stake Emergency Communications Specialist, under the direction of the Stake High Councilor over Emergency Preparedness and the Stake Presidency, runs the Emergency Communication activities. The Ward Communications Specialists act as a committee under the direction of the Stake Emergency Communications Specialist.
